These pics are from last year when The Toddler* and his Toddler Pal had a joint birthday party. Isn't that cake amazing? Toddler Pal's mum made it. From scratch! I'm posting about it today because this year the boys are having another joint party with a pirate theme. And guess who's baking the cake. Yup. Me. I love baking and can whip up muffins, cupcakes, lemon cakes, chocolate cakes, etc. no problem. But I have never attempted a fancy cake. Gulp. Wish me luck! (Any tips, links or recipes will be gratefully received!)
*The Toddler will be 3 soon so I guess that means he's not actually a toddler anymore. I can't believe how time has flown! I suppose I should start calling him The Boy :-)
That cake is awesome! My mum made me a train cake when I was a similar age...tips for big shaped cakes...just bake sponge and cut out shapes to build a structure then any mistakes you can cover in icing! Good luck, take a pic for us!x
ReplyDeleteYup, I was quite blown away by that cake myself :-) Thanks for the tip. I will be sure to take lots of pics no matter the outcome! x
DeleteChocolate biccie or Wagon Wheel for eye patch?

ReplyDeleteEmail me if you want tips on making a sunken treasure chest cake. It was really very easy!!! (Easier than a pirate ship, I figure...) Good luck! x
Hi Greer, that cake look fab! Off to email you now... x
DeleteLove that cake ... I'm sure yours will be equally fabulous ... I make regular chocolate cakes for my littles birthdays ... thinking I may need to up my game :) ... Bee xx
ReplyDeleteI'd keep it simple for a cake. Maybe just go for chocolate. Then add some mini pirate cake bunting, striped candles and put some chocolate coins around the plate (pieces of eight!). x
ReplyDeleteoh my \i am going to be looking to you for inspiration for the future, good luck look forward to seeing the end result! x
ReplyDeleteblimey, that sounds like quite a project, good luck! x
ReplyDeleteThat cake is amazing! My friend (who is not a professional baker) made her son a treasure chest cake for his pirate themed birthday party when he turned 4. It was brilliant. A square-ish shape covered in brown fondant icing, but she'd built it so that the chest lid was propped open, revealing "treasure" ie gold coins, sweets, jewels etc. I don't think it was that hard. Crushed biscuits made good sand around the chest on the cake board. Or you could just go with Jen's idea which sounds a lot less stressful! Good luck. xx
